Indiana

Program Description

Since 1997, ESP has managed Indiana’s vehicle emissions testing program in Lake and Porter counties, testing as many as 200,000 cars per year. The Clean Air Car Check program includes seven northern Indiana stations, with 22 testing lanes. Stations are located in Hammond, Griffith, Hobart, Crown Point, Valparaiso, Gary and Portage, Indiana.

Four types of tests are conducted in conjunction with the Indiana program:

  • gas cap pressure test for all vehicles;
  • BAR 90 single-idle speed test for 1976 – 1980 model years;
  • Inspection/Maintenance 93 for model years 1981 – 1995;
  • OBDII for vehicles 1996 and newer.

Clean Air Car Check is currently in the process of studying the impact of liquid and vapor hydrocarbon leaks in vehicles failing the emissions inspection.
